Product Safety & Compliance Policy

Product Safety & Compliance

Product safety, explained as plainly as we source it.

This page sets out, in full, how Selenalondon approaches product safety across sandals, dresses, footwear and three-piece linen sets — the legal frameworks we work within across the United Kingdom and France, what we ask of our manufacturing and fulfilment partners, and how you can raise a safety concern about anything you've bought from us.

Our Commitment

Safety is a sourcing decision, not an afterthought.

Selenalondon is the trading name of JLA Marketing, a French retailer selling sandals, dresses, footwear and three-piece linen sets exclusively to customers in the United Kingdom. We do not manufacture our own products; we select styles from vetted production and fulfilment partners, write our own listings, and take full responsibility for making sure what reaches your door is safe, honestly described and fit for its intended use.

This policy explains the safety standards we require of every product category we sell, the legal obligations that apply to us as a France-based seller shipping into the UK, and the practical steps we take — and expect our partners to take — before a product is ever listed on this site. Where a claim below depends on information supplied by a manufacturing partner (such as a specific chemical test result), we say so plainly rather than presenting it as our own laboratory finding.

If you ever have a concern about the safety of an item you've received, please stop using it and contact us straight away using the details in Section 10. We treat every safety report seriously and investigate it with the relevant supplier.

Legal basis

The frameworks that govern everything we sell.

Because JLA Marketing is registered and based in France but sells only to the United Kingdom, two overlapping bodies of product safety law apply to us: the law of our home market, and the law of the market we sell into. We treat both as binding, and where the two frameworks differ, we apply whichever standard is more protective of you as the customer.

UK General Product Safety Regulations 2005

The core UK product safety requirement, requiring that any consumer product placed on the UK market — including everything we ship — must be safe under normal or reasonably foreseeable use. This applies directly to our sandals, footwear, dresses and linen sets.

SI 2005/1803

EU General Product Safety Regulation 2023/988

As our products are manufactured and dispatched from within the EU/France, our sourcing and supplier obligations are aligned with this regulation, which has applied across the EU since 13 December 2024 and sets out risk-assessment and traceability duties for economic operators.

Regulation (EU) 2023/988

UK REACH & EU REACH

Both regimes restrict or ban specific hazardous substances — including certain azo dyes, phthalates and heavy metals — in textiles, footwear and accessories. We require our suppliers to formulate dyes, coatings and adhesives in line with these restricted-substance lists.

Chemical safety

French Code de la consommation

As a French-registered seller, JLA Marketing is separately bound by France's consumer code, which sets general product conformity and safety-information obligations on any business placing goods on the market from France — reinforcing, not replacing, our UK-facing duties.

Code de la consommation

A note on how UK product safety law is changing

The UK Government is currently consulting on a new core product safety framework, under powers granted by the Product Regulation and Metrology Act 2025, intended to replace the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 and bring UK requirements closer in line with the EU regime described above. We monitor this process and will update our sourcing requirements and this page as the new framework is finalised and takes effect.

Dresses & linen sets

Textile safety & chemical compliance

Our dresses and three-piece linen sets are made from woven fabrics, linen-blends and standard textile trims (buttons, zips, elastication). We require every manufacturing partner supplying these categories to confirm, in writing, that dyes and finishing agents used do not contain the substances restricted under UK REACH and EU REACH — including the banned azo dyes that can release specific aromatic amines, and formaldehyde levels kept within recognised safe limits for skin-contact garments.

Where a manufacturing partner holds independent textile testing or certification for a specific product line — such as OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 or an equivalent recognised scheme — we reference that certification directly on the relevant product listing rather than applying it as a blanket claim across the whole catalogue. If a listing does not mention a specific certification, that means one has not been supplied to us for that item, and you are welcome to ask us before you buy.

What we require of suppliers

Written confirmation of REACH-compliant dyes and finishes, no banned azo dyes, and formaldehyde and phthalate levels within permitted limits for skin-contact textiles.

What we do on our side

We review supplier compliance declarations before listing a product, keep records on file, and remove or amend any listing where accurate compliance information cannot be confirmed.

Sandals & footwear

Metal fittings, soles and adhesives.

Lead content

Sandals, heels and slip-ons with metal buckles, eyelets or decorative fittings must meet the lead-content limits set for consumer goods under UK and EU chemical safety law. We require confirmation from suppliers that plating and metal components have not been treated with leaded finishes.

Nickel release

Metal fastenings that sit in prolonged contact with skin — buckles, rivets and adjustable strap hardware — are required to stay within the nickel release limits set out under UK and EU chemical restrictions, reducing the likelihood of a nickel allergic reaction for sensitive wearers.

Soles & adhesives

Cushioned and orthopedic-style soles are checked by our suppliers for secure bonding and stable adhesive compounds, and phthalate-containing plasticisers are restricted in line with REACH Annex XVII limits for footwear components that may contact skin.

We are a retailer rather than a footwear manufacturer, so these standards are enforced through our supplier agreements and pre-listing checks rather than through in-house laboratory testing of every unit sold. If any footwear item you receive shows signs of a loose fitting, sharp edge, unusual odour or other defect, please stop wearing it and contact us using the details in Section 10 — we will investigate with the relevant supplier and offer a resolution under our Refund & Return Policy.

Sensitive skin & allergies

Allergen & sensitivity information.

Some customers are sensitive to specific materials commonly used in fashion and footwear, most often natural rubber latex and nickel. Where a specific product is confirmed by our supplier to be latex-free or to use nickel-free hardware, that detail is stated on the relevant product page — we do not apply "latex-free" or "nickel-free" as a general claim across the whole catalogue unless it has been confirmed for that item.

If a product page does not mention a specific allergen status, please contact us before ordering if you have a known sensitivity, and we will check with the relevant supplier and reply within 24 hours on business days. As with any new garment or pair of shoes, we'd also recommend a short trial wear before extended use if you have a history of skin sensitivity.

Behind the scenes

How we qualify a supplier before we list their products.

Pre-listing review

Before any sandal, dress, shoe or linen set is added to the site, we review the supplier's specification sheet, sample photography and any compliance documentation already available for the item.

Written declarations

Suppliers confirm in writing that materials, dyes and metal components meet the UK REACH and EU REACH restricted-substance limits described in Sections 3 and 4 before we agree to list a product.

Ongoing record-keeping

We keep supplier declarations and product specifications on file for the duration a listing is active, so that if a safety question is ever raised, we can trace it back to the source manufacturer promptly.

On every item

Labelling, material composition & country of origin.

LABEL

What's on the garment or footwear label

Every dress and linen set carries a fibre-composition label in line with textile labelling requirements applicable in the UK, along with washing and care symbols. Footwear items include manufacturer information on the packaging or attached tag where supplied by the manufacturer.

LISTING

What's on the product page

Each listing states the primary materials used (for example, linen-blend, synthetic upper, or vegan leather trim), along with sizing guidance. We update listings promptly if a supplier notifies us of a material or specification change.

ORIGIN

Country of manufacture

Products are manufactured by our partner network, and country-of-manufacture information is included on the product label or packaging in line with the supplier's own labelling. If you'd like to confirm the country of manufacture for a specific item before ordering, contact us and we'll check with the supplier.

CARE

Care instructions

Following the washing and care guidance on the garment label — rather than assuming standard machine-wash settings — helps linen-blend fabrics and printed or embellished dresses keep their finish and colour over repeated wears.

If something goes wrong

Monitoring, corrective action & product recalls.

If we become aware — whether through a customer report, a supplier notice, or a regulatory alert — that a product we've sold does not meet the safety standards described on this page, we act promptly. Depending on the severity of the issue, this can include removing the listing immediately, pausing further sales of that batch, contacting affected customers directly, and offering a repair, replacement or full refund.

Where a genuine safety risk is confirmed, we will notify the relevant enforcement authority for the market in which the product was sold and follow their guidance on any formal recall notice, in addition to contacting customers who purchased the affected item directly using the details held on their order.

Our response steps

Investigate with the supplier, remove or suspend the listing, notify affected customers, and offer a remedy under our Refund & Return Policy.

Your role

Report any suspected safety issue as soon as you notice it, and keep the item and its packaging where possible until we've confirmed next steps with you.

Adult sizing only — not designed, tested or marketed for children

All Selenalondon products — sandals, dresses, footwear and three-piece linen sets — are designed, sized and marketed exclusively for adult women. None of our listings are intended, tested or labelled as children's products, and the safety standards referenced throughout this page relate to adult consumer footwear and apparel rather than the additional regulatory regime that applies specifically to children's goods.

A few clauses worth spelling out

This Product Safety & Compliance Policy sits alongside, and does not replace, our Terms of Service, Refund & Return Policy, Shipping Policy and Privacy Policy. Where a remedy for a faulty or unsafe item is needed, our Refund & Return Policy sets out the practical process; this page explains the safety standards that sit behind it.

As a retailer rather than a manufacturer, we rely on written declarations, specifications and, where available, test certificates supplied by our manufacturing partners to confirm compliance with the standards described in this policy. We review this information before listing a product and act quickly if it's later shown to be inaccurate, but we do not independently laboratory-test every unit we sell. We believe this is an honest and standard basis on which fashion retailers operate, and we've set it out here rather than implying otherwise.

Nothing in this policy limits your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 to receive goods that are as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose, or your right to cancel most orders within 14 days under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. This policy is additional information, not a substitute for those rights.

We review this policy regularly and update it as our product range, supplier network or the underlying UK and French legal requirements change — including as the UK's proposed new product safety framework, described in Section 2, is finalised. The "Last updated" date in the hero above always reflects the current version.
