Bad Feminist

I decided to take a break from fiction books. I picked up this book instead. The book, Bad Feminist, is a book by the author named Roxane Gay. Bad Feminist is a funny and an articulate book. It is a book of essays. It is a memoir. It is also a critical analysis of today’s world from the eyes of a feminist.

The author talks about her journey as a feminist. The author writes about what it means to be a feminist in today’s world. She writes anecdotes about her life. She uses these anecdotes as a way to discuss feminism. She also writes about pop culture, about race, and about her issues with the opposite-sex. She is critical and makes reflections about the world and the culture of the 21st century while making comments about feminism in the current world.

Bad Feminist is a call-to-arms that encourages women to be feminists. The book encourages women to be, “bad feminists.” Let me explain. It encourages women to be whatever-type-of-feminist that they want to be regardless of labels and the different beliefs people have about what a feminist should be, or what a feminist should not be.

The book is also written with an engaging voice. The author writes in a personable way. The author writes with wit and humor. There are parts of this book that are laugh-out-loud funny. There are also parts of the book that are thoughtful.

I thought the book was smart and funny. Overall, I give this book an 8/10 rating.

Until next timeā€¦

The Magicians

I really liked the book, The Magicians, by Lev Grossman. The Magicians is the first book in a three-part series. Many people say that the book, The Magicians, is like an adult-version of the Harry Potter books. I would say that I agree with them.

The Magicians is about a boy named Quentin Coldwater. One day Quentin is transported to a magical location. While he is there he discovers that he is accepted into a magical college. The magical college is named Brakebills University. Quentin happily decides to go to Brakebills University.

At Brakebills University Quentin learns magic. He goes on many adventures. He makes friends that are a part of those adventures. Quentin learns that even though he has magic his problems aren’t entirely solved. In fact, magic doesn’t solve everything. Sometimes it is even a hindrance, not a boon.

The Magicians is a great novel. It is a smart and an edgy book. It is filled with magic, friendship, and even love. I give this novel a 9/10 rating. I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was a wild ride. I will definitely pick-up the other two books in this book series.

That’s it for this book review.

Never Let Me Go

I read the book named Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. The book is a dark dystopia-type-of-novel. It is also a science-fiction book. It is a book that has gone under-the-radar. I liked it, overall, but I had my problems with the book.

Never Let Me Go is about a girl named Kathy H. Kathy H. recounts her time at a boarding school named Hailsham. At Hailsham Kathy H. had to deal with many things. She had to do with social-politics. She had to deal with growing-up. She also had to deal with love. At Hailsham Kathy H. grew-up to be the woman that she is.

She also learned a dark secret there.

I will not reveal the secret in this review, but I will say that the whole book is centered around that secret. When you read the book you can not help but to wonder, “What is this really about?” You ask, “What is Hailsham?” Finally, you ask yourself, “Why are these kids so different?”

The answer to these questions becomes apparent in the second-half of the novel. When you find-out what is really going on in the story you are shocked.

First, I will begin with the reasons why I liked this book. I liked Never Let Me Go because the novel was a good character study of the main character, Kathy H. It was interesting to get into her thoughts and into her memories.

However, in my opinion the book was too dark. I also didn’t like the fact that the author did not tell you the secret about Hailsham until the second-half of the book. Throughout most of the novel I could not help but to wonder, “What is going on here?”

Another thing that I did not like about this book is the love-story between the main character, Kathy H., and her love-interest, Tommy. I wanted there to be more about Tommy and Kathy H. I wanted the author to flesh-out more about the two character’s relationship and the love that they shared.

Overall, I give this book a 5/10 score. You should pick up this book if you like dark stories. You should also read this book if you are interested in dystopia-fiction, or if you are interested in science-fiction. However, if you want something lighter to read, then, you should give this book a pass.

That’s it for this review.

I love the book, Emma, by Jane Austen. I love Jane Austen’s books in general; however, Emma is one of my favorites. I have read the book over a few times and I still find it to be an engaging and a romantic read.

Emma is about a beautiful and rich woman who lives in an English manor with her father. Emma loves going out to parties and she loves going out on outings with her other privileged neighbors. She also loves match-making. Emma tries to match-up one of her new friends… a girl named Harriet Smith. She tries to match-up Harriet with another one of her friends, a pastor named Philip Elton. However, Emma’s machinations cause more harm than good. It is Emma’s fault that Harriet’s true-love is pushed away.

While all of this is going on, Emma has to deal with other matters of the heart… her own. Emma must look deep inside-of-her-heart to figure out which man she is truly meant for… the dashing Frank Churchill or her neighbor, George Knightley. She also has to deal with her inner-jealousy against the accomplished and the poised Jane Fairfax.

Emma is a great book to read. It is a dense read because it is written in an old English style; still, I found myself loving it again when I did re-read it. If you are interested in Jane Austen, then, I think you should give this book a shot.

I hope you take this recommendation to heart. ‘Til next time…

The Lovely Bones

I read the book, The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold. It’s not a book for the faint of heart. The Lovely Bones is a book about a girl named Susie Salmon. Susie Salmon is murdered. Her family tries to deal with her tragic death… and they try to discover the killer.

The Lovely Bones is a sad book and a dark book. The book is written from Susie’s perspective. Susie watches her family from her place in heaven. She watches as her family struggles to cope with her murder. She watches as her family tries to find her murderer.

I didn’t like this book. I kept reading The Lovely Bones with the hope that there would be some closure. I kept reading the book with the hope that there would be some spark of light in it. I kept reading the book with the hope that there would be a rhyme or a reason to the madness. Sadly, there was none.

I think that you should not read this book. I think that you should skip this book instead. There is so much more to read out there. You should save yourself the pain and the heartache.

That’s all for this post.

Until next time…

Julie & Julia

The book Julie & Julia by Julie Powell is a hilarious book. Julie & Julia is a blog-to-memoir book. The writer, Julie Powell, recounts her time when she wrote a blog on how-to-cool. Now, it is its own book.

The story of Julie & Julia is about Julie Powell. Powell decides to start a blog about her endeavor to cook every recipe in Julia Child’s cookbook, The Art of Mastering French Cooking. Julia Child is Powell’s inspiration and her motivation to cook. This book talks about Julie’s endeavor to finish 524 recipes from The Art of Mastering French Cooking in a total of 365 days.

Powell’s memoir is written in a funny way. It is filled with exclamatory words. It is also filled with funny anecdotes about the past. You learn a lot about Powell’s life. You learn a lot about the daily struggles Powell deals with while she tries to keep-up with her writing project.

Julie & Julia is written in a smart, but irreverent way. It is a great book to read if you want to learn how-to-cook. It is a great book to read if you want to read something that will make you laugh-out-loud.

I think Julie & Julia is a funny book. You should give the book a shot.

That’s all for now.

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments Book #1)

I really enjoyed the book City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. City of Bones is the first book in Clare’s Shadowhunters series. It is a book with a lot of twists and turns. I loved it from the beginning to the end of the book.

City of Bones is a book about a red-headed girl named Clary Fray. Clary goes to a club one night with her best-friend who’s name is Simon. Clary witnesses a crime at the club. She sees a man get stabbed. However, no one else witnessed the incident.

What could that mean? Well, Clary discovers that the man who was stabbed was a demon… and the people who were doing the stabbing were half-angel and half-human beings. The half-angel and half-human beings are called Shadowhunters. They hunt demons.

While all this takes place something happens to Clary’s mother, Jocelyn Fray. Suddenly, she disappears. Suddenly, she’s gone.

Clary is taken into a world of magic as she tries to find her mother. There are worse beings out there other than Shadowhunters. There are Warlocks. There are vampires. There are werewolves. And there is a dark evil in the background named Valentine.

The City of Bones is a great ride. There are a lot of action scenes that I really like. I also like the romance between Clary and her rescuer, the Shadowhunter named Jace Wayland. Jace acts tough, but the chemistry between Clary and Jace makes you root for the two of them to end up together.

I really enjoyed this book. I will definitely pick up the other books in the Shadowhunters series.

I suggest you pick up the book, too, if you life fantasy books.

That’s it for today’s update.

Until next time…

The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is a dark, dystopian book that deals with a lot of difficult issues. The Handmaid’s Tale is about a world where women are separated into different groups. In the book, women can no longer have children. The Handmaid is the woman who bears the children. She is the one who has sex with the patriarch, or man, of the household. The Handmaid is still able to provide children for the future of that new nation known as Gilead.

In The Handmaid’s Tale we follow a woman named Offred. Offred tries to live by the rules of the new world. She tries to do what she needs to do to survive. The end of the book is left ambiguous. You are never sure of what happens to Offred. You are left with many questions and little insight. However, you hope for the best.

The Handmaid’s Tale deals with a lot of things that the world faces today… however, people may not be aware of it. It deals with the inequality between men and women. Is it a woman’s only job to bear children? Is it a woman’s only job to take care of the man of the house?

I think most people would say “no” to that. A woman can think. A woman can work. A woman can be independent. Thankfully, A Handmaid’s Tale is a fiction book that bears no resemblance to the real world. However, if we do not watch out the inequalities between men and women can still affect our society in negative ways.

That’s it for this post. Stay tuned for the next one.

Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice is a famous book by the author named Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice is a classic book that many people love… that includes me. Pride and Prejudice is a book about four girls. The girls are named Jane Bennet, Elizabeth (or Lizzie) Bennet, Kitty Bennet and Lydia Bennet. The book is from Lizzie’s point-of-view.

The book begins with a new person in town. The person is named Charles Bingley. Bingley moves into a manor in the town. The four Bennet’s see Bingley as a prospect for marriage. The Bennet sisters see another person who is a catch, too. The other person is friends with Bingley. His name is Fitzwilliam Darcy. Darcy makes a bad impression on Lizzie and the girls’s mother. However, the girls still view Darcy as a well-off man who would be a catch.

The book is a romance between Lizzie and Darcy. It is also about the social dance that goes on between men and women. Lizzie has a lot of pride even though she comes from a poor family. She has prejudice against Darcy because Darcy is rich. Darcy has a lot of pride because of his rich place in British society. He has prejudice against the Bennet’s because they aren’t as well-off as him.

Pride and Prejudice is a great classic book. It is about a dance that has gone on since the beginning of time… the dance that naturally happens between men and women when they come-of-age.

I think you should pick up Pride and Prejudice if you want to read a classic book that is a challenge to read.

So, that’s it for now.

Looking for Alaska

“Looking for Alaska,” by John Green is a great young-adult novel. “Looking for Alaska” is about teenagers who want to grow-up. It’s about teenagers figuring themselves out. It’s about teenagers loving, fighting and making mistakes. The main character of the book is a teenager named Miles Halter. Miles’s friends nick-name him Pudge. Pudge is a new kid at the prep school named Culver Creek. Pudge goes to Culver Creek prep school to make new friends and to find himself… he goes there to find his, “Great Perhaps.” What does he find when he gets to Culver Creek?

He finds Alaska.

Alaska is Alaska Young, a beautiful, smart and vivacious teenager. Alaska is a center point of Pudge’s circle-of-friends. She is wild and spontaneous. Everyone thinks they get Alaska… but, they don’t know what’s going on in her head.

Something tragic happens to Alaska. It’s up to Pudge and his circle-of-friends to figure out why.

“Looking for Alaska” is a crazy ride. You love, you laugh and you cry when you read the book. I think everyone should check-out this book. It is powerful and poignant.
