The latest book that I read is the book titled, The Help. The Help is a book by the author named Kathryn Stockett. The book is about a woman named Skeeter Phelan. It is set in the 1960’s during the Civil Rights movement. Skeeter moves back to her hometown after her time in college. Skeeter wants to be a journalist. She gets a job at her hometown newspaper. Her job is to write the “Ms. Merna column.” The “Ms. Merna column” is a newspaper column where a person who takes the name of “Ms. Merna” answers household cleaning questions for the people who write-in with their problems. That’s where the story really starts.
Skeeter gets to know a African-American maid named Aibileen. Aibileen helps Skeeter to write her “Ms. Merna column.” While Skeeter writes her column she comes-up with an idea for a book that she wants to write. Skeeter wants to write about the people in her town… from the perspective of the African-American maids that work there.
Something else is going-on in the town. Skeeter has a friend named Hilly Holbroke. Hilly spear-heads a campaign that says that African-American maids need to use another restroom instead of the white restroom of the people that the maids work for. Skeeter knows that this is racism. She knows that it is wrong.
The Help is a book all about “The Help” in Skeeter’s small Southern town. It is about how the help live, struggle and survive. I enjoyed this book a lot. It is a good book to read during this difficult cultural climate. It paints a picture of a world where racism runs rampant. It shows you how people can look down on other people because of the color of the people’s skin. This is a really good book to read today because of the Black Lives Matter movement that is happening all across America.
I enjoyed this book immensely. I think more people should read it. I give this book 4/5 stars.
Always with infinite love,
