The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is a dark, dystopian book that deals with a lot of difficult issues. The Handmaid’s Tale is about a world where women are separated into different groups. In the book, women can no longer have children. The Handmaid is the woman who bears the children. She is the one who has sex with the patriarch, or man, of the household. The Handmaid is still able to provide children for the future of that new nation known as Gilead.

In The Handmaid’s Tale we follow a woman named Offred. Offred tries to live by the rules of the new world. She tries to do what she needs to do to survive. The end of the book is left ambiguous. You are never sure of what happens to Offred. You are left with many questions and little insight. However, you hope for the best.

The Handmaid’s Tale deals with a lot of things that the world faces today… however, people may not be aware of it. It deals with the inequality between men and women. Is it a woman’s only job to bear children? Is it a woman’s only job to take care of the man of the house?

I think most people would say “no” to that. A woman can think. A woman can work. A woman can be independent. Thankfully, A Handmaid’s Tale is a fiction book that bears no resemblance to the real world. However, if we do not watch out the inequalities between men and women can still affect our society in negative ways.

That’s it for this post. Stay tuned for the next one.

Until next time…

Always with infinite love,
Selena London
